  5. From catwalk to archive shelf – About H&M’s growing archive

It was far from obvious that clothing giant H&M, founded in 1947, would ever create an extensive archive. In an industry where the next collection is always just around the corner, it took a while before the company's heritage began to be perserved in a more organized fashion (pun intended). Only in 2008 did the company start working to document and preserve its heritage -- and they did it in close cooperation with us at the Centre for Business History.

A driving force in the process was Margareta van den Bosch, the company's chief designer from 1986 to 2007, who wanted to secure H&M's history for the future, for both the family Persson that owned the group and all its employees. Together with fashion historian Ingrid Giertz-Mårtenson, we conducted extensive interviews with former employees – following established oral history-practices – which became an important part of the archive's foundation.

Since then, the archive has grown considerably. Today, deliveries to the archive arrive almost every month from different parts of the world. H&M currently has nearly 200 shelf meters of archived documents, about 240 shelf meters of images and objects, 70 boxes of mixed materials, 35 larger objects, and 7 paintings in the archive at the Centre for Business History in Bromma. In addition, there is a growing digital archive with more and more GB saved - material that the company can access it via our digital reading room.

Of course, a key part of the archive are the special designer collections. From the high-profile cooperation with Karl Lagerfeld to later initiatives like Studio Collections and Innovation Stories. Each collection becomes part of a larger story about how H&M has evolved over time.

But the archive is not just a place for memories. It is actively used in the business. Designers and other teams return to the material when planning new collections or sales collaborations, with the goal of learning from the company's past successes (and less successful projects).

H&M now keeps history alive physically on site at the headquarters, where historical exhibitions are put on rotating display in the main arrival hall and common lunch hall. Perhaps there's even a full H&M Museum somewhere in the future?
