The Society for the Promotion of Public Education (SFUB) was founded in 1822. Since then, its activities have included running its own schools, training teachers, and supporting further education and study trips. SFUB's historical archive at the Nordic Museum contains material that tells the story of everything from student attendance at schools to how the organization worked to spread new knowledge regarding both pedagogy and other areas, such as agriculture.
In this anthology, "I bildningens tjänst" (loosely translated as "In the service of education") which was commissioned by SFUB, educational historians and educators have examined nine different areas related to SFUB's activities from 1822 to 1974. The editors of the book are Germund Larsson and Johanna Ringarp, both academic researchers in educational history.
