About 80 guests came to celebrate the 149th birthday of economic freedom and the launch of the book The Age of Economic Freedom, the seventh part in CfN's report series.
The beautiful summer evening offered delicious food and speeches from author Ulrika Knutson, Axess editor-in-chief P J Anders Linder, Svenskt Näringsliv CEO Urban Bäckström, and not least from one of the men behind the economic freedom reform of 1864 - then Minister of Finance Johan August Gripenstedt. Actor Lennart R Svensson brilliantly interpreted the liberal advocate of economic freedom as he rehearsed a speech that the Minister of Finance gave on June 8, 1857.
Gripenstedt set fire to his words as he argued for free trade and economic freedom against those who believed such things only led to unnecessary luxury for the lower classes.
– Do you want to confine them only to the water of the spring and the stove of oat bread?
